Look, December in Peniscola is genuinely unpredictable, and anyone who tells you otherwise is guessing. The Mediterranean coast of Castellón can throw mild, pleasant days at you – think 12 to 16 degrees, perfectly walkable – or it can deliver grey, damp stretches that make the castle look brooding rather than dramatic. You genuinely won’t know until you’re there. Pack layers and accept the gamble.

What it’s actually like is this: quiet. Properly quiet. The summer crowds that cram into that narrow old town peninsula are completely gone, and you get to walk the medieval streets around the castle without anyone’s selfie stick in your face. The Castell del Papa Luna sits there looking genuinely imposing rather than like a backdrop for tourist photos, and you can actually stop and think about the place. There’s something kind of melancholy and beautiful about a Spanish beach town in winter, all shuttered ice cream shops and locals reclaiming their own streets.

The downside is that plenty of restaurants and shops in the old town will be closed, especially mid-week. You’ll need to do a bit of research before you go rather than assuming you can wander and find dinner anywhere. The beach is empty and windswept, which is either atmospheric or depressing depending on your mood.

Is it worth going? Honestly, yes – for the right person. If you like slow travel, history, photography, or simply walking somewhere beautiful without crowds or noise, December Peniscola is genuinely underrated. It’s also cheaper, significantly. If you need guaranteed sunshine, warm water, and a buzzy atmosphere, just wait until May.

It’s not ideal for families with kids who need entertainment, and it’s not a winter sun destination in any reliable sense.

**Practical tip:** Drive or get a taxi in from Benicarló or Vinaròs rather than relying on reduced winter bus schedules, and call ahead to any restaurant you actually want to eat at. Don’t assume it’ll be open.
