# Poreč in December: Honest Thoughts

Look, Poreč in December is a completely different animal from the place you’ve seen in summer Instagram photos, and whether that’s good or bad depends entirely on what you’re after.

The weather is genuinely grey and damp. Ten degrees sounds manageable until you factor in the humidity rolling off the Adriatic and the fact that 85mm of rain across the month means you’re probably getting wet at some point, possibly several points. Pack a proper waterproof, not a fashion jacket. The old town’s stone streets get slick and the wind off the water has real teeth in it. Evenings feel properly cold.

What you gain is something kind of remarkable: the place is almost entirely yours. The Euphrasian Basilica, which is genuinely one of the most beautiful early Byzantine buildings in Europe and completely worth the visit, you can wander through without bumping into anyone. The old town’s grid of Roman streets feels atmospheric rather than overcrowded. You can actually look at things, sit with things, think about things. It’s almost eerie how quiet it gets.

The honest catch is that a significant chunk of the restaurant and bar scene shuts down for winter. You’ll find places open, locals do eat out, but your options are noticeably thinner. Some hotels close entirely. The waterfront promenade is lovely for a moody walk but there’s no buzz, no life in the way there is from May onwards.

Worth visiting in December? Honestly, yes, but for a specific type of person. If you want history, quiet, affordable accommodation, and genuinely slow travel where nobody is trying to sell you a boat trip every thirty seconds, this is your month. If you need sunshine, beach energy, or extensive dining choices, go in September instead.

**One practical tip:** book accommodation that includes breakfast. With restaurants playing reduced hours and some closing randomly on weekdays, having a guaranteed warm meal sorted before you head out into whatever the sky is doing that morning removes more stress than you’d expect.
