You can actually walk the Decumanus, browse the market, and sit outside for lunch without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. The Adriatic is still warm enough to swim comfortably because the sea holds its temperature well into autumn, so you’re not sacrificing anything on that front.

Crowds thin out noticeably after the first week, though early September still carries some school-holiday traffic from German and Austrian families. By mid-month, the old town feels like it belongs to actual humans again. You can get a table at Konoba Ulixes without planning your evening around it, which feels like a small miracle after August.
