# Portofino in April: Pretty Much Perfect If You’re Not Chasing Sun
Look, Portofino is one of those places that photographs itself. The pastel houses, the boats, the whole absurd prettiness of it. But go in August and you’ll be sharing that view with approximately eight thousand other people who had the same idea. April is different.
The weather is genuinely mixed. Around 16°C means comfortable walking temperatures but pack a proper layer because the sea breeze has no manners whatsoever. You’ll get roughly 30mm of rain spread across the month, so expect a few grey mornings and the occasional shower that sends everyone scrambling into the same small café simultaneously. It’s not beach weather. Don’t arrive expecting beach weather.
What you get instead is the town actually breathing. The harbour is accessible. You can sit at one of the waterfront restaurants without feeling like you’ve been processed through a tourist conveyor belt. Staff are genuinely pleased to see you rather than pleasantly exhausted by you. The hiking trail up to Castello Brown and along the headland to San Fruttuoso is spectacular in April, everything green and flowering, with clear views before summer haze settles in.
Most restaurants and shops are open, though a handful of the smaller places might still be shaking off winter. The village itself is tiny – a genuine thirty-second walk from one end to the other – so you’re not losing much if one spot is closed.
Is it worth it? For couples, solo travellers, photographers, walkers – absolutely yes. For families with young children expecting beach days and ice cream weather, maybe wait until June. For anyone who needs wall-to-wall sunshine to enjoy a holiday, also wait. But if you appreciate that sweet spot where somewhere beautiful hasn’t yet been overwhelmed by its own reputation, April delivers it.
**Practical tip:** Don’t drive into Portofino itself. Park in Santa Margherita Ligure and take the bus or the ferry. The road into the village is painfully narrow and parking is both scarce and expensive. Save yourself the stress.
