Visiting Protaras in March
# Protaras in March: What It’s Actually Like
Look, March in Protaras is genuinely a bit of a gamble, and anyone telling you otherwise is trying to sell you something.
The weather sits in that awkward in-between zone. You’re looking at temperatures somewhere in the mid-teens, occasionally pushing toward 18 or 19°C on a good day, but equally capable of dropping back and feeling properly chilly, especially in the evenings. Rain is possible – March can bring some genuinely grey, wet days with no apology. You might land a gorgeous sunny week. You might not. That’s just the honest reality of early spring in the eastern Mediterranean.
What you will definitely get is the place almost entirely to yourself. Fig Tree Bay, which in summer resembles a human car park, is practically deserted. You can walk the coastal paths without negotiating around selfie sticks. The whole resort exhales.
The flip side is that Protaras in March feels noticeably shut down. A lot of restaurants, water sports operators, and beach bars simply haven’t opened yet. You’ll find some tavernas and supermarkets functioning, but don’t expect the full choice. The resort runs on summer logic, and summer hasn’t arrived yet.
So is it worth going? It depends entirely on what you want. If you’re after guaranteed beach weather, swimming, and buzzing nightlife, honestly no – wait until May at the earliest. But if you’re after cheap flights, zero crowds, long coastal walks, decent lunches with a sea view, and the genuine feel of a place rather than its tourist performance, March has real appeal. Photographers, hikers, couples wanting quiet, and anyone with severe crowd aversion will find something genuinely lovely here.
It also suits people who just need to escape grey northern winters for even a modest upgrade in light and temperature. Even a cloudy Cypriot day often has a brightness to it that does something good for your head.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation with a kitchenette. With limited restaurants open, having the option to cook a few meals yourself removes a lot of daily stress and expense.
