Visiting Procida in May
# Procida in May: What It’s Actually Like
May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Procida, and I say that as someone who thinks most “shoulder season is best!” advice is lazy filler. Here it actually holds up.
The island starts coming properly alive in May after a fairly quiet winter. Restaurants that closed or operated skeleton hours through February and March are fully open again, boat rental places are running, and the pastel harbour you came to see actually has some energy to it without being completely overwhelmed. You get the place feeling like itself rather than a ghost town or a theme park.
Weather-wise, May in this part of the Bay of Naples tends to be warm and genuinely pleasant – think low-to-mid twenties Celsius on good days – but it’s not reliably scorching. You’ll get beautiful sunny stretches and you’ll also get grey, drizzly days that nobody warns you about. Pack a light layer and don’t plan your entire trip around beach days unless you’re prepared for some of them to not happen. The sea is also still pretty cold for swimming, so manage expectations there.
Crowds are noticeably lighter than July and August, which on a small island matters enormously. Procida is tiny. In peak summer it can feel genuinely crammed, especially along the Marina Corricella. In May you can actually stop, look at the fishing boats, drink your coffee without someone’s wheelie case hitting your ankle. Italians from Naples also start visiting on weekends, so Saturday and Sunday get busier than weekdays.
Who should visit in May? Anyone who wants atmosphere over beach holiday. Photographers, people who like wandering without a plan, couples who’d find August crowds exhausting, anyone doing a wider Campania trip and adding a day or two.
**One practical tip:** Take the ferry from Pozzuoli rather than Naples. It’s cheaper, slightly less crowded with tourists, and the crossing is lovely. Many people don’t know it exists.
Worth it? Yes, genuinely.
