# Pula in July: What It’s Actually Like

Let’s be straight with you: July in Pula is hot, busy, and absolutely worth it if you go in knowing what you’re signing up for.

That 24.3°C average is technically accurate but a little misleading. That’s the average. In reality you’ll be standing in the Roman amphitheatre at midday thinking someone turned a hairdryer on your face. Afternoons regularly push into the low 30s, and the Istrian stone reflects heat like a pizza oven. The 5mm of rainfall basically means it might shower once during your entire trip, briefly, and then get even more humid. Pack accordingly.

The crowds are real. Pula isn’t Dubrovnik-levels of chaos, but July brings a serious influx of Italian, German, and Croatian domestic tourists. The Arena queues move reasonably well, but get there before 9am or after 6pm if you want that unobstructed photo. The old town fills up in the evenings especially, which is actually part of the appeal – there’s a genuine buzz, restaurant terraces are packed, people are drinking cold wine at 10pm and it feels alive rather than overwhelming.

Everything is open. This is peak season, so every museum, boat tour, restaurant, and beach bar is running full tilt. The Pula Film Festival typically runs in late July, screening films inside the amphitheatre at night, which is genuinely one of the more spectacular things you can do in any European city.

Is it worth it? Yes, if you enjoy summer energy and don’t mind sharing the place. You’ll love it if you’re into history combined with beach days – Cape Kamenjak is 20 minutes away and dramatically beautiful. It’s probably not your month if you burn easily, hate eating when it’s still 28°C, or want a quiet contemplative experience.

**Practical tip:** Do your sightseeing before 10am, then retreat somewhere shaded or coastal from noon until four. Pula’s locals have followed this schedule for centuries. They’re not wrong.
