Visiting Rab in September
# Visiting Rab in September: The Honest Version
September on Rab is genuinely one of those months where you’re rolling the dice a little, but it’s often a very good roll.
The first half of the month still feels like summer. The sea is warm from three months of baking sun, air temperatures sit comfortably in the mid-to-high twenties, and you can absolutely spend your days swimming at Lopar or wandering the old town in just a t-shirt. The second half is less predictable. You might get stunning blue-sky days that feel like borrowed time, or you might catch a stretch of grey, windy weather with bora gusts that make the beaches feel pretty miserable. Rainfall picks up compared to July and August but it’s rarely relentless – more like occasional interruptions than a soggy holiday.
Crowds drop noticeably after the first week of September and sharply after the fifteenth. This is genuinely excellent news. The old town of Rab – which in August becomes a sweaty corridor of shuffling tourists – becomes actually pleasant to walk around. You can get a table at decent restaurants without waiting, find parking without wanting to cry, and feel like you’re visiting somewhere rather than processing through it.
Most things are still open in early September. By the final week, some smaller beach bars and boat trip operators start winding down, but restaurants, shops and the main beaches remain accessible. October is when things really close up.
Is it worth visiting? Yes, with caveats. If you want guaranteed hot weather and a buzzing atmosphere, go in July. But if you’re someone who finds peak season crowds exhausting, values having breathing room, and doesn’t mind accepting some weather uncertainty, September Rab is a genuinely lovely proposition. It suits couples, older travellers, and anyone who prefers a quieter pace over a party scene.
**Practical tip:** Bring a light jacket and something waterproof even if the forecast looks good. Weather on Adriatic islands can shift fast in autumn, and the evenings cool down more than you expect after dark.
