Visiting Rethymno in February

# Rethymno in February: The Real Story

February is about as far from peak Crete as you can get, and honestly, that’s either a selling point or a dealbreaker depending on what you’re after.

The weather is genuinely unpredictable. Some February days in Rethymno are mild, clear and almost suspiciously pleasant, the kind where you’re eating lunch outside in a light jacket feeling smug about the grey skies back home. Other days are cold, wet and windy, with rain rolling in off the sea and the old town feeling more melancholy than charming. You simply cannot know in advance which version you’ll get, and you’ll probably experience both in the same week. Pack accordingly and don’t build your trip around beach days because that would be a mistake.

What you will get is the place almost entirely to yourself. The Venetian harbour, the old town’s winding lanes, the lighthouse walk – all of it without tour groups, selfie sticks or the suffocating summer crowds. Rethymno’s old town is genuinely beautiful and February is one of the few times you can actually feel that without negotiating around other tourists.

The trade-off is that plenty of things close or run reduced hours. Many tavernas, especially the ones catering heavily to tourists, shut completely or only open on weekends. You’ll find enough open restaurants to eat very well, but your options are narrowed. Museums and the Fortezza are generally accessible, which matters.

Is it worth visiting? For independent travellers who want atmosphere over sunshine, who enjoy walking, good food without fuss, and exploring without pressure, genuinely yes. For anyone chasing a warm holiday with reliable beach weather, absolutely not – go in May instead.

The place has real soul in winter. Locals are actually present and approachable in a way they simply cannot be in August.

**Practical tip:** Book a place with reliable heating and check specifically that it’s functional before you commit. Some older accommodation in the old town is charming in summer and genuinely cold in February if the heating is inadequate.
