Visiting Rhodes in April

Weather in April: Average high 20.2°C, 30mm rainfall.

# Rhodes in April: Quietly Good

April is probably my favourite time to visit Rhodes, and I say that having also been there in August when I spent most of my time resenting other tourists and hiding from the sun.

The weather sits around 20°C, which sounds modest until you’re actually there. It’s genuinely warm in the sunshine, comfortable for walking the medieval Old Town without feeling like you’re being slowly cooked. You’ll need a light jacket for evenings and the occasional breezy day, and that 30mm of rain does materialise – usually as a shower that rolls in, does its thing, and disappears within an hour. It’s not the kind of rain that ruins a trip. It’s the kind that gives you an excuse to sit in a taverna longer than planned.

The crowds are manageable in a way that’s almost shocking if you’ve only known Rhodes in summer. You can actually stand in front of the Street of the Knights and look at it properly. The Palace of the Grand Master lets you move at your own pace rather than shuffling along in a human conveyor belt. Most restaurants and sites are open – April sits past the very quiet early-season period when things are still shuttered – so you’re not compromising on experiences, just on chaos.

The sea is cold, around 17°C, so swimming is for the committed or the slightly unhinged. Don’t come expecting a beach holiday. Come expecting good food, genuine history, and countryside covered in wildflowers that’s genuinely beautiful right now.

Is it worth it? Absolutely, with the right expectations. It suits couples, history enthusiasts, walkers, and anyone who actively dislikes crowds. It’s less ideal if you have children who’ve been promised beach days, or if your holiday only works with a pool that’s warm enough to actually use.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation in Rhodes Town itself rather than the resort strips. In April those resort areas feel half-asleep, but the Old Town has its own year-round life and you’ll be far happier based there.
