Visiting Roses in October
Visiting Roses in October
# Roses in October: The Honest Version
October in Roses is genuinely a bit of a gamble, and that’s worth saying upfront. The Costa Brava in autumn can be absolutely stunning – warm enough to sit outside, golden light hitting the bay in a way that summer’s harsh glare never quite manages. It can also be grey, drizzly and slightly melancholy, with half the shutters down and a distinct feeling that the town has exhaled and moved on without you. You’re rolling the dice on which version you get.
The crowds, at least, are not a problem. October sits firmly in the shoulder season, meaning the hordes of August feel like a distant nightmare. You’ll actually be able to walk the seafront without negotiating around slow-moving families with ice creams. The beach, if the weather cooperates, is yours in a way it absolutely wasn’t two months earlier. This is genuinely lovely, not just tourist-brochure lovely.
What’s open is the honest catch. A meaningful chunk of restaurants, bars and shops will have closed for the season by mid-October, particularly anything targeting the holiday crowd. You won’t be choosing from twenty beachfront restaurants; you’ll be grateful for the five that stayed. The good news is those five are often the places locals actually eat, which tends to mean better food and significantly better prices. The Cap de Creus natural park remains fully accessible and spectacular, and the Ciutadella ruins are open year-round.
Is it worth visiting? For families with school-age children, probably not – the infrastructure for holiday entertainment is genuinely depleted. For couples, solo travellers, walkers, cyclists or anyone who finds August Roses exhausting just to think about, October can be quietly wonderful. The hiking around the headland in cooler temperatures is far better than sweating through the same trails in July.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation only after checking individual properties are actually open that week. Don’t assume. A quick email saves arriving to find your chosen hotel closed until spring. Smaller guesthouses often close mid-month without much online warning.
