# Rovinj in December: Pretty, Quiet, and a Little Bleak
Look, Rovinj in December is genuinely beautiful, but let’s be straight with you: it’s also pretty sleepy, occasionally grey, and nothing like those Instagram photos that probably made you want to go.
The old town still looks incredible. Those rust-coloured buildings stacked up around the hill, the narrow cobbled lanes, the harbour — none of that disappears in winter. On a clear December day with low winter light bouncing off the Adriatic, it’s actually stunning in a melancholy, end-of-season way that some people absolutely love. The problem is you’re averaging around 7-8°C and roughly 65mm of rain across the month, which means a fair few of those days involve pulling your hood up and squinting into a drizzle. Not miserable exactly, but not aperitivo-on-the-terrace weather either.
The crowds? Basically nonexistent. You’ll have the old town almost entirely to yourself, which is either peaceful or slightly eerie depending on your temperament. There’s something genuinely lovely about wandering those lanes without another tourist in sight. There’s also something slightly melancholy about walking past shuttered restaurant after shuttered restaurant trying to find lunch.
And that’s the honest catch. A significant chunk of places close between November and March. Some restaurants stay open, a few bars, the bakeries. You won’t starve or go thirsty, but your options are limited. The little tourist shops are largely shut. Museum of the City of Rovinj does tend to stay open, and the Church of St. Euphemia is worth climbing to regardless of season.
**Is it worth it?** If you want somewhere quiet, atmospheric, and cheap to walk, think, eat good Croatian food, and decompress — genuinely yes. If you need buzzing nightlife, beach energy, or want everything open and available, wait until May.
**One practical tip:** Book accommodation directly with smaller guesthouses. Many aren’t even listing online in December, but they’re absolutely open and often thrilled to have guests. You’ll get better prices and actual conversation.
