# Palermo in July: Hot, Sweaty, and Honestly Still Worth It
Let me be straight with you: July in Palermo is *intense*. That 29.9°C average sounds manageable until you factor in the humidity rolling off the Mediterranean and the fact that you’ll be walking on sun-baked stone streets that radiate heat upward like a pizza oven. By 2pm you won’t want to be anywhere except horizontal under a ceiling fan or in the sea. Plan accordingly.
The 8mm of rain essentially means nothing. You might get one brief, dramatic storm that smells incredible and cools everything down for about forty minutes. Then it’s back to brutal sunshine. Pack accordingly.
**The crowds are real but not unbearable.** Palermo isn’t Amalfi or Cinque Terre – it’s a working city of 600,000 people who largely ignore tourists, which is actually refreshing. Yes, the Cappella Palatina and the markets will be busy, but you won’t be shuffling through barriers. The Ballarò and Vucciria markets are genuinely alive regardless of tourist numbers, though Vucciria really wakes up after dark in summer when it becomes more of an outdoor party.
Everything is open. The street food scene – arancine, panelle, sfincione, that infamous spleen sandwich – operates year-round and July is no exception. Restaurants stay open late, people eat at 9pm or 10pm, and the entire city shifts its rhythm to avoid the worst heat. You should do the same.
**Is it worth visiting in July?** Yes, if you’re someone who likes heat, late nights, and rewards patience with a cold Aperol somewhere beautiful. The evenings are genuinely magical – warm air, noise, good food, the cathedral lit up. It suits night owls and beach people well. If you hate being hot or have young children who nap at noon, consider May or October instead.
**One practical tip:** book accommodation with air conditioning confirmed in writing, not just listed as an amenity. In older Palermo buildings, “air conditioning” can mean a lot of things. Some of them are lies.
