# Saint-Tropez in April: Before the Madness
Here’s the thing about Saint-Tropez in April – you’re essentially getting a completely different town to the one that exists in July. Whether that’s a good thing depends entirely on what you’re after.
The weather sits around 16 degrees, which sounds decent until you’re sitting outside a café and a cloud rolls in off the sea. Pack a proper jacket. You’ll get maybe two or three days of genuine sunshine that tricks you into thinking summer has arrived early, followed by a grey, drizzly stretch that reminds you it absolutely hasn’t. That 30mm of rain spreads itself across the month unpredictably, so mornings can look beautiful and afternoons can turn soggy fast.
The crowds, or rather the absence of them, is genuinely striking. The port looks like a film set that hasn’t started shooting yet. Those famous mega-yachts are elsewhere. The Gendarmerie roundabout – gridlocked chaos in summer – is just a roundabout. You can actually walk through Place des Lices without being shoulder to shoulder with people who’ve paid a fortune to be shoulder to shoulder with people.
What’s actually open is patchy, though. Some restaurants are still shuttered after winter, a handful of beaches are operating skeleton service, and the serious nightlife is essentially non-existent. The market still runs Tuesday and Saturday, and it’s legitimately good in April – locals outnumbering tourists for once.
Is it worth it? Honestly, yes, for the right person. If you want to photograph the old town without crowds photobombing every shot, browse the market, eat well without booking weeks in advance, and pay significantly less for accommodation, April genuinely delivers. It’s also wonderful for cycling the Presqu’île peninsula before summer heat makes that unpleasant.
It’s not worth it if you’re expecting the Saint-Tropez of glossy magazines. That version doesn’t exist until June at the earliest.
**One practical tip:** Book a table at a restaurant that’s actually open on a Tuesday, then spend the morning at the market first. That’s your perfect April day right there.
