# Santorini in April: Honest Take

April is genuinely one of the better times to visit Santorini, though probably not for the reasons the Instagram algorithm has trained you to expect.

The weather sits around 20°C, which sounds perfect on paper and mostly is. You’ll get genuine sunshine and genuinely pleasant afternoons, but pack a light jacket because mornings and evenings have a real bite to them, and the wind off the caldera is no joke. That 30mm of rainfall usually arrives as a few moody, dramatic days rather than constant drizzle – honestly, watching a storm roll across the caldera from a café in Oia is something the summer crowds never get to experience.

**Crowds are manageable but not absent.** Easter week, whenever it falls, brings significant numbers of Greek visitors plus early European tourists. Outside that window, you can actually walk the Fira to Oia path without feeling like you’re in a theme park queue. The famous sunset spots have people, but you can find a position without elbowing anyone.

**What’s open:** Most restaurants, hotels, and shops reopen in late March or early April after winter hibernation. Some smaller places are still finding their rhythm early in the month, so you might encounter a few closed doors. Wine tours at Santo Wines and Domaine Sigalas are operating and far more relaxed than summer. Boat tours to the volcano run regularly but check schedules, as they’re weather-dependent.

**Is it worth it?** If you want beaches and swimming, honestly wait until June – the sea is around 17°C in April, which is cold unless you’re aggressively Scandinavian. But if you want the actual island experience – good food, real conversations with locals, breathing room at archaeological sites, and that extraordinary landscape without sensory overload – April genuinely delivers.

**One practical tip:** Book accommodation on the caldera side in Oia or Imerovigli, but check the exact cliff position carefully. In April’s lower light, the view difference between rooms is significant and not always obvious from listing photos. Ask directly.
