# Formentera in September: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About Enough

Honestly, if someone asked me the best time to visit Formentera, September would be my answer without much hesitation.

The August madness has cleared out. That particular brand of chaos — boats rafted six-deep in the coves, beach bars with 45-minute waits, the faint sense that you’re sharing a small island with half of Barcelona and Milan — it dissolves around the first week of September like it was never there. The island exhales. You can actually hear it.

At 25.7°C, the weather is essentially perfect. Hot enough for swimming and doing nothing on a lounger, cool enough to actually walk somewhere without suffering. The sea temperature is still properly warm from a full summer of sun, so the water feels like a luxury rather than a shock. Those famous flat turquoise stretches at Illetes and Llevant look exactly like the photos, but now you can see the sand between the towels.

About 26.8mm of rain across the month sounds almost laughably low, and in practice that’s one or two brief afternoon rumbles that rarely derail a whole day. Pack a light layer for evenings though — September nights have a genuine coolness to them that August definitely doesn’t.

What’s still open: most of it. Restaurants, bars, watersports, bike rental, ferries running regularly from Ibiza. Some of the bigger beach clubs start winding down mid-month, but the local places — the family-run spots that locals actually care about — these stay open and suddenly feel welcoming rather than overwhelmed.

Is it worth visiting? If you’re a couple, a group of friends who want actual conversation over dinner, anyone who finds peak summer crowds quietly exhausting — yes, absolutely. Families with school-age kids will obviously struggle with timing, which is precisely why it’s quieter.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation slightly earlier than you’d expect to need to. September has a devoted following of repeat visitors who already know this secret, and the good smaller places fill up faster than the month’s reputation suggests they should.
