Visiting Side in April

# Side in April: Quietly Good, Actually

April is one of those months in Side where you kind of luck out without fully realizing it. The crowds from the summer peak haven’t arrived yet, so you can walk through the Roman ruins and actually stop to look at them without being shuffled along by tour groups. The Temple of Apollo at sunset? You might have it almost to yourself. That changes dramatically come June.

The weather is genuinely pleasant rather than spectacular. Expect somewhere in the mid-teens to low twenties Celsius most days, which is perfect for walking around the old town and exploring the ruins without sweating through your clothes. But April in this part of Turkey is unpredictable. You’ll likely get a mix of warm sunny days and overcast ones, and there’s a reasonable chance of some rain. Pack a light jacket and don’t build your entire trip around beach days because the sea is still cold enough that swimming is more of a dare than a pleasure.

Most things are open, which matters more than people think. The archaeological museum is running, the restaurant scene along the harbour is alive, and you’ll find local businesses actually wanting your custom rather than going through the motions of high season exhaustion. Prices for accommodation are noticeably lower than July or August.

Is it worth it? For couples, solo travellers, or anyone genuinely interested in the history rather than the pool bar, absolutely yes. If you’re travelling with kids who have their hearts set on beach holidays, maybe wait a month or two. If you want a relaxed pace, actual conversation with locals, and to take photographs that don’t include fifty strangers in the background, April works really well.

**One practical tip:** Book your accommodation somewhere in or very close to the old peninsula rather than the resort strip to the west. April is the right time of year to actually experience Side rather than a generic Turkish beach resort, and being central makes that difference completely obvious within the first hour.
