Visiting Silves in December
Visiting Silves in December
# Silves in December
Look, nobody’s going to lie to you and say December is the obvious time to visit Silves. But it’s also not the disaster some people assume it will be.
The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You might get a run of mild, sunny days where you’re sitting outside in a light jacket eating a pastel de nata and feeling smug about your off-season wisdom. You might also get a week of grey drizzle that makes the Moorish castle look atmospheric at first and then just wet. Average temperatures hover around 14-16°C during the day, but that can swing. Pack layers and accept the uncertainty. This is the Algarve’s honest winter face, not the glossy brochure version.
What December does give you is the town back to itself. Silves is small – genuinely small – and in summer it gets swamped by day-trippers from the coastal resorts. In December you can walk up to the castle without queuing, stand on the red sandstone walls and actually think, and wander the old streets without someone’s selfie stick in your face. The cathedral is open and quiet. The little restaurants are open too, mostly, though a few close for breaks in November or January rather than December specifically.
The Christmas market, if it’s running, is modest and local in the best sense. No pretensions. This is worth checking locally before you go because programming varies year to year.
Is it worth it? Absolutely, if you’re someone who prefers texture to sunshine, history to beach bars, and actually talking to people in shops rather than being processed through a tourist experience. It’s also genuinely cheap compared to peak season – accommodation prices drop significantly.
It’s not worth it if you’re hoping for warm evenings or outdoor dining as a reliable daily experience. That’s not December’s promise.
**Practical tip:** Rent a car. Silves itself is walkable, but December’s shorter days are better spent reaching the Serra de Monchique or the quieter inland villages nearby, and public transport connections are thin.
