Visiting Skopelos in September

# Skopelos in September: The Sweet Spot Nobody Talks About Enough

September might genuinely be the best time to visit Skopelos, and I’ll tell you why without overselling it.

The heat backs off noticeably from August’s punishing highs. You’re looking at temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s Celsius for most of the month, warm enough to swim comfortably but not the kind of heat that makes you want to lie very still in a darkened room by noon. The sea is at its absolute warmest because it’s been absorbing sunshine all summer, so swimming is genuinely wonderful. Rainfall is generally low, though later in September you might catch the occasional shower as autumn starts thinking about showing up. It’s rarely dramatic, but pack a light layer for evenings regardless.

Crowds thin out meaningfully after the first week. August on Skopelos is hectic – the island is small and has never been equipped for mass tourism, which is both its charm and its logistical reality. By mid-September, the ferry queues are shorter, the restaurants aren’t turning you away, and you can actually sit in a taverna in Skopelos Town without someone hovering to take your table. The place exhales.

Most things are still open throughout September. Restaurants, boat trips, moped hire, the beaches – all functioning. Toward the very end of the month some smaller places start closing up, so if you’re going late September, don’t assume everywhere will be running.

Is it worth visiting then? Absolutely yes, particularly if you’re not travelling with young children who need reliable beach entertainment from dawn to dusk, or if you genuinely cannot bear crowds. Couples, solo travellers, and anyone who finds August holidays a bit exhausting will find September Skopelos genuinely restorative.

**One practical tip:** Book your accommodation before you go, even in September. The island doesn’t have endless options, and the good places still fill up. Don’t assume the quieter month means you can wing it on arrival. You cannot, and you will end up disappointed.
