Visiting Sliema in July
# Sliema in July: What to Actually Expect
Let me be straight with you about July in Sliema – it is hot. Properly, aggressively hot. Malta sits in the middle of the Mediterranean and July is peak summer, so you’re looking at temperatures regularly hitting 33-35°C, sometimes nudging higher. The sun is relentless from about 9am onwards, and the rocky coastline along the Sliema promenade absorbs and radiates heat back at you in a way that feels almost personal. Rainfall is essentially a non-event – you might see a brief shower across the whole month, but genuinely don’t pack an umbrella expecting to need it.
The crowds are real and you should know what you’re walking into. Sliema in July is packed. It’s a shopping and dining hub rather than a purely tourist town, which gives it slightly more authenticity than nearby St Julian’s, but the promenade fills up fast, restaurant queues appear at weekends, and the ferries across to Valletta get busy. This is Malta’s high season without apology.
The upside is that absolutely everything is open and running. Boat trips, water taxis, the ferry, every restaurant, every shop. The water temperature is gorgeous – warm, clear, genuinely inviting – and the rocky swimming spots along the front are busy but usable. The nightlife nearby in Paceville is in full swing if that matters to you.
Is it worth it? Honestly, it depends on your tolerance. If you handle heat well, love buzzy summer atmosphere and want everything operating at full capacity, July works well. Families with kids who just want sea and sun will have a good time. If you’re sensitive to heat or prefer quieter streets, you’ll find it exhausting rather than enjoyable.
**One practical tip:** do your outdoor walking and exploring before 11am or after 6pm. The midday hours are genuinely difficult, and trying to sightsee at 2pm in direct sun will drain you faster than you’d expect. Treat the afternoon as a rest period and you’ll enjoy the place considerably more.
