Look, December in Sorrento is a gamble, and anyone who tells you otherwise is trying to sell you something.

The weather is genuinely unpredictable. You’re looking at temperatures hovering around 10-14°C, and rainfall is a real possibility – not constant drizzle, but proper Mediterranean downpours that arrive without much warning and then disappear. Some December days are crisp, sunny and absolutely stunning, with the bay of Naples glittering and Vesuvius sitting sharp against a blue sky. Other days are grey, damp, and the narrow streets feel slightly melancholy. You won’t know which version you’re getting until you’re there.

What you will get is the town largely to yourself. The summer chaos – the tour buses, the selfie queues, the impossible scramble for a restaurant table – is essentially gone. The streets of the centro storico are walkable. You can actually stand at the clifftop viewpoints without elbowing past someone. Locals are genuinely more present and more relaxed, and the place starts to feel like somewhere people actually live rather than a stage set.

Most things are open, though hours get shorter. Restaurants and shops operate on reduced schedules, and some smaller places close entirely for a week or two around Christmas. The Amalfi Coast road trips are dramatically quieter if you’re hiring a car, but check bus schedules carefully as services thin out considerably.

Is it worth going? For the right person, absolutely. If you hate crowds more than you hate uncertainty, December works well. It suits slow travellers, couples, anyone who wants to eat well, walk without frustration, and genuinely absorb the place. It’s less suited to people who need guaranteed sunshine to enjoy a holiday – that person will be miserable on a grey Tuesday staring at a closed limoncello shop.

**One practical tip:** Pack actual waterproofs, not just a light jacket. Not because it will definitely rain, but because if it does and you’re underprepared, the whole trip shifts. Get the rain gear right and a wet afternoon becomes a perfectly good excuse for a long lunch.
