Visiting Sorrento in September
Visiting Sorrento in September
# Sorrento in September: The Sweet Spot (With a Catch)
September is genuinely one of the better times to visit Sorrento, but let me give you the real picture rather than the glossy one.
**What it actually feels like**
Early September is basically August with slightly less sweating. Temperatures hang around the high 20s Celsius, the sea is still warm from a whole summer of sunshine, and the light in the evenings is absurdly beautiful. By late September things soften noticeably — cooler mornings, the occasional overcast day, and that first hint that summer is packing its bags. Rainfall is genuinely unpredictable. You could get a perfect two weeks or you could hit a few days of serious downpours, particularly as you move toward October. Pack a light layer and don’t bet everything on outdoor plans.
**The crowd situation**
Significantly better than July or August, but don’t imagine you’ll have the place to yourself. The first two weeks especially still carry that late-summer weight — families squeezing in the last school holiday, Italian tourists doing the same. From mid-September onward it noticeably calms down. You can actually walk along the waterfront without feeling like you’re in a very slow queue.
**What’s open**
Essentially everything. Restaurants, boat trips, the Circumvesuviana to Pompeii, ferry services to Capri and Positano — all running fully. This is important because some shoulder months elsewhere mean patchy services. September doesn’t have that problem in Sorrento.
**Is it worth it, and for whom?**
Absolutely yes, particularly for anyone who found August prices eye-watering or hates crowds on principle. Couples, solo travellers, and anyone over thirty who has silently given up on peak season chaos will feel at home. Families with younger children might actually prefer early September while the sea is still swimming-friendly.
**One practical tip**
Book your ferry tickets to Capri in advance, even in September. It catches people out. The boats fill up faster than you’d expect, and standing on a dock watching one leave without you is a miserable way to spend a morning.
