# Split in April: Honest Thoughts

April in Split is genuinely one of my favourite times to visit, but it’s worth being straight with you about what you’re actually getting.

The weather sits around 16°C, which sounds perfectly pleasant until you’re standing in the shade of Diocletian’s Palace with a sea breeze cutting through your jacket at 10am. Pack layers. You’ll be fine by afternoon when the sun gets going, but mornings and evenings have a definite bite to them. There’s around 30mm of rain spread across the month, so expect maybe five or six days where you’ll get caught in a shower. Nothing dramatic, but carry something waterproof rather than assuming it’s summer yet.

The crowds situation is honestly the best reason to come in April. Locals are still using their own city like a real place. You can sit in Peristyle Square with a coffee and not feel like you’re performing tourism. The narrow lanes inside the palace walls are actually walkable. Come July and this entire experience disappears under a wall of selfie sticks and group tours. April feels like you’ve been let in on something.

Practically everything worth seeing is open. The palace itself is always accessible since people live inside it, which still amazes me. Museums are running normal hours. Restaurants are open, though some seasonal spots on the islands haven’t woken up yet. The ferry to Brač and Hvar runs, though schedules are reduced compared to summer. You can absolutely do a day trip to Hvar Town, just check return times carefully.

The beaches are not happening. The Adriatic is cold and nobody is swimming. If your version of Croatia requires sunbathing, come back in June.

April suits curious, independent travellers who actually want to explore rather than just bake. History people, walkers, food-focused visitors, photographers. It’s brilliant for them.

**One practical tip:** Book accommodation in the old town itself rather than outside the walls. In April you still can do this affordably, and walking out your door directly into a Roman emperor’s palace never gets old.
