Visiting Cairo in April
# Cairo in April: What You’re Actually Getting Into
Here’s the thing about Cairo in April – it’s genuinely one of the better times to visit, but with one asterisk that nobody in a brochure will warn you about properly.
Temperature-wise, April sits in that sweet spot before the city becomes genuinely brutal. You’re looking at mid-20s Celsius most days, occasionally nudging toward 30 toward the end of the month. Mornings are pleasant, evenings are comfortable, and you’re not yet melting at the Pyramids by 9am the way you would be in July. Rain is essentially irrelevant – Cairo barely gets annual rainfall to speak of, so pack accordingly and don’t waste luggage space on a jacket for that reason.
The asterisk is **khamsin**. These are hot, dusty sandstorms that roll in during spring, and April is prime season. They arrive without much warning, turn the sky an eerie orange-yellow, coat everything in fine grit, and make outdoor sightseeing genuinely unpleasant for a day or two. Most trips aren’t ruined by one, but some are. You should know this going in.
Crowd-wise, April is busier than winter but not suffocating. Easter can spike things noticeably depending on the calendar year, so check that before booking. Giza, the Egyptian Museum, and Luxor day-trips will have tour groups, but nothing like the shoulder-to-shoulder chaos of peak European summer. Everything is open, sites are fully operational, and the city is functioning normally.
Who should go in April? Honestly, most people. If you tolerate heat reasonably well and aren’t precious about perfect blue skies every single day, this month works well. History enthusiasts, first-timers, photographers – all good. If you have respiratory issues, the khamsin dust is worth taking seriously.
**One practical tip**: book your Pyramid visit for early morning, ideally right at opening. By 10am the tour buses have arrived and the energy shifts completely. Those first two hours you’ll actually be able to think, look, and feel something rather than just queue.
Cairo rewards the prepared visitor. April generally delivers.
