# Thessaloniki in March: Honest Thoughts
March in Thessaloniki sits in that awkward middle ground where winter hasn’t quite packed its bags but spring is clearly on the way. You’re looking at around 14°C on a decent day, which sounds reasonable until the wind comes off the Thermaic Gulf and reminds you that you’re not in summer anymore. Pack a proper jacket. The 45mm of rainfall spread across the month means you’ll almost certainly get caught in at least one grey, drizzly afternoon, so waterproof shoes matter more than you’d think.
That said, the city feels genuinely alive in a way it doesn’t in peak summer. Thessaloniki is a student city with a local culture that doesn’t disappear when tourists arrive, and in March there are barely any tourists to speak of. The waterfront promenade, the Ladadika neighbourhood, the tavernas around Modiano Market — these are full of Greeks actually living their lives. It’s a pleasantly normal atmosphere that the city honestly wears well.
Everything is open. This isn’t like some European destinations that half-shut down in the off-season. The Archaeological Museum, the Byzantine museums, the White Tower — all running normally, often with almost no queue. Restaurant reservations are rarely necessary. You can walk up to Ano Poli, the old upper town, without sweating and without navigating around tour groups. It genuinely improves the experience.
**Is it worth it?** For most people, yes. Especially if you care about food, Byzantine history, or just wandering a real city without feeling like you’re on a film set. Thessaloniki rewards slow exploration, and March gives you the time and space to do that.
It’s less ideal if sunshine and beach days are non-negotiable, or if you’re travelling with young kids who need reliable outdoor weather to stay happy. Manage those expectations.
**One practical tip:** bring layers you can actually peel off by midday. Mornings can feel properly cold, then the sun appears and you’re suddenly overdressed. The city does a lot of its best living outdoors, so you want to be comfortable moving between the two.
