# Herceg Novi in May: What It’s Actually Like

May is genuinely one of the better times to visit Herceg Novi, but not for the reasons the travel sites usually lead with.

The temperature sits around 21°C, which sounds perfect on paper, and honestly it mostly is. You can walk the old town’s steep stairways and fortress walls without sweating through your clothes, and evenings are warm enough to sit outside with a glass of local wine without needing a jacket. The Adriatic is still cold for swimming though – don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Locals aren’t getting in yet.

That 148mm of rain is real and worth respecting. May brings proper Mediterranean showers, not just a light drizzle. They tend to come in bursts rather than ruining entire days, but you’ll almost certainly get caught in at least one downpour. The Kanli Kula fortress and the old town look genuinely dramatic in wet weather, so it’s not a disaster, just something to plan around.

Crowds are refreshingly thin. The summer invasion hasn’t arrived yet, so you can actually browse the Saturday market, find a table at restaurants without waiting, and walk the Šetalište promenade without feeling like you’re in a queue. Most places are open – restaurants, boat trips, the fortress – though a handful of seasonal beach bars and tourist-facing shops are still warming up.

Is it worth it? For culture-focused visitors, hikers interested in the Orjen mountain trails above town, and anyone who values atmosphere over beach time, absolutely yes. For people whose holiday success depends on daily swimming and full resort energy, wait until late June.

**Practical tip:** Book accommodation slightly inland or in the old town itself rather than at the waterfront. In May the water-facing terraces can be windier and more exposed during those rain squalls, and you’ll get more authentic local character – and better prices – just a few minutes’ walk up the hill.

Go in May knowing what it is: a beautiful, breathing town that hasn’t put its tourist face on yet. That’s the point.
