# Thessaloniki in May: Worth the Trip

May is honestly one of the better times to visit Thessaloniki, and I say that as someone who’s been there in August and genuinely suffered for it.

**What the weather actually feels like**

That 21.7°C average sounds polite and manageable, and mostly it is. You’ll have warm sunny days where sitting along the waterfront promenade with a freddo espresso feels basically perfect. But “average” is doing some work there – early May can still throw cool evenings at you, and the 20mm of rainfall usually arrives as a few proper showers rather than constant drizzle. Pack a light jacket you don’t mind stuffing into a bag. You’ll use it.

**The crowd situation**

This is genuinely one of May’s best arguments. The city hasn’t been overrun yet. The tourist infrastructure is fully awake – restaurants are open, the White Tower has normal hours, archaeological sites aren’t operating skeleton crews – but you’re not fighting through selfie sticks at Rotonda or waiting forty minutes for a table at a decent meze place. Thessaloniki also has a huge student population that keeps the city lively regardless of tourist season, so it never feels empty or sleepy.

**What’s actually worth your time**

The food scene is the real reason to come here at any time of year, and May lets you enjoy it without heat exhaustion. The Upper Town (Ano Poli) is walkable without wanting to die. Byzantine churches, Roman ruins sitting casually between apartment blocks, the Modiano Market – all accessible, all unhurried.

**Who should come in May**

Honestly, most people. It suits city-breakers, history lovers, serious eaters, and anyone who visited Athens and thought “I want Greece but less frantic.” It’s less ideal if you’re chasing beach weather – for that, you’d want July or August.

**One practical thing**

Book accommodation slightly earlier than you think you need to. A couple of festivals and long weekends in May mean the better-value central options disappear faster than the city’s tourist volume would suggest. Two weeks ahead is usually fine; leaving it to the last few days sometimes isn’t.
