Look, December in Trapani is genuinely unpredictable, and anyone telling you otherwise is guessing. Western Sicily gets hit with Mediterranean weather systems that can swing wildly – you might land in brilliant, crisp sunshine with temperatures hovering around 14-16°C, or you might spend half your trip watching horizontal rain batter the saltpans. Pack layers and a proper waterproof and just accept that upfront.

What you get in exchange for that uncertainty is a Trapani that actually belongs to the Trapanesi. The summer crowds that clog the streets and push restaurant prices up have completely evaporated. You can walk the entire historic centre, which is genuinely beautiful with its Arab-Norman architecture and that dramatic promontory jutting into the sea, without anyone bothering you. The saltpans and windmills west of town look atmospheric in winter light, possibly even more photogenic than in summer.

Most of the essential stuff stays open. The Museo Pepoli, the churches, the fish market on weekday mornings – these are part of real local life and don’t hibernate. Some smaller restaurants and bars do reduce hours or close for a week or two around Christmas itself, so checking ahead is worth the thirty seconds it takes. The Erice cable car operates, and honestly Erice in moody winter fog is spectacular rather than disappointing if you reframe your expectations.

Is it worth going? For the right person, absolutely yes. If you want cheap accommodation, zero competition for the best tables, a chance to eat excellent couscous and fresh swordfish without feeling like you’re on a conveyor belt, and a genuinely slower pace – December delivers. If you need guaranteed beach weather or you’ll be miserable, this is not your month.

**Practical tip:** Book a rental apartment rather than a hotel. In December the prices are low enough that you can get somewhere central with a kitchen, which matters when you discover the morning fish market and want to buy things and actually cook them. That experience alone justifies the trip.
