Fethiye earns its reputation, but it also tests your patience, and knowing which version you’re going to get depends almost entirely on when you arrive and how well you’ve planned. Come in July or August and you’ll find a town straining under the weight of British package tourists, charter boats lined three deep along the marina, and Ölüdeniz looking more like a floating lilo convention than the turquoise paradise on every screensaver. Come in May, June, September, or October and you’ll find something genuinely worth the flight.

The town itself is working harbour first, tourist destination second, and that tension is actually what makes it interesting. The old bazaar behind the marina sells real things to real people alongside the usual leather jackets and evil eye magnets. The Lycian rock tombs carved into the cliff face above the town are extraordinary, lit up at night and visible from half the restaurants on the waterfront, and most visitors barely glance up at them. That’s your first lesson here: look up, look inland, look anywhere except directly at the obvious.

Ölüdeniz is twenty minutes away by dolmuş and yes, the lagoon is as blue as advertised, but the beach itself is crowded and expensive. Go early, swim in the lagoon before ten, and leave by noon. Kayaköy, the abandoned Greek village two kilometres from Ölüdeniz, is where the real emotional weight sits. A whole community emptied out during the 1923 population exchange, roofless stone houses stretching across a hillside in complete silence. Most people drive past it on the way to the beach. Don’t.

The 12 Islands boat trip is genuinely good value and a pleasant way to swim in clear water and eat a mediocre lunch. The Gulet cruises leaving from the marina, multi-day sailing trips along the coast, are the proper way to see this stretch of the Mediterranean if your budget and schedule allow.

Stay in or around the central marina area or up in the hills above town where some excellent small guesthouses have views worth waking up for. Avoid the strip hotels along the main road.

Fethiye suits independent travellers who don’t mind doing a little work to find the good version of a place. If you want everything handed to you frictionlessly, somewhere else will make you happier. If you’re willing to get up early and walk slightly further than the crowd, this coast will reward you properly.
