Visiting Tunis in August

# Tunis in August: What You’re Actually Getting Into

Let’s be straight with you: August in Tunis is hot. Genuinely, relentlessly hot. We’re talking 35°C plus on most days, with humidity creeping in from the coast to make sure you can’t even enjoy a dry heat. By mid-afternoon, the medina’s narrow streets trap warmth like an oven, and you will be shuffling from shadow to shadow questioning your life choices.

Rainfall is essentially a non-issue. August is bone dry, so you won’t pack an umbrella, but you will go through more water than you think is humanly possible.

Here’s the interesting thing about crowds though: Tunis itself empties out in August. Many Tunisians leave the capital for coastal towns like Hammamet or Sousse, and a lot of local businesses, smaller restaurants, and family-run shops simply close or run reduced hours. The city takes on a slightly sleepy, in-between feeling. Tourist numbers exist but the medina isn’t overwhelmed the way European summer destinations get, so you’re not fighting through tour groups at Zitouna Mosque.

The major sites stay open — Bardo Museum, the medina, the ancient ruins at Carthage nearby — but expect reduced energy everywhere. Some of the best local restaurants will have their shutters down.

So who should actually come in August? Honestly, heat-tolerant travelers on a tight budget will find good value. Accommodation prices are reasonable, the city feels authentically quiet rather than performatively touristy, and if you’re using Tunis as a base for day trips rather than intense urban exploration, it works well. Sidi Bou Said in the early morning before the heat builds is genuinely beautiful and manageable.

If you’re easily knocked sideways by heat or you want the full, buzzing version of the medina with everything open and locals going about their lives, September is a much kinder choice.

**One practical tip:** Start everything before 9am. Seriously. Get your walking done, your sightseeing done, your market browsing done. By noon, find a café with air conditioning and surrender gracefully until late afternoon.
