# Visiting Vis in March
Vis in March is quiet in a way that feels almost confrontational. The island has a permanent population of around 1,500 people, and in March, you’ll be genuinely outnumbered by cats and fishing boats. That’s either the whole appeal or a dealbreaker, depending on what you’re after.
The weather is mild but properly moody. At 13.2°C you’ll want a jacket, and with nearly 77mm of rain spread across the month, you should expect grey days, sudden showers, and that particular Adriatic light that makes wet stone look beautiful rather than depressing. It won’t rain constantly, but pack accordingly and don’t build beach days into your plan.
The honest picture on crowds: there essentially aren’t any. Vis Town and Komiža both feel like villages going about their actual lives rather than performing for visitors. Locals will notice you, occasionally chat to you, and not particularly need anything from you. It’s genuinely pleasant if you like that dynamic.
What’s open is the trickier question. Some restaurants operate reduced hours or close mid-week entirely. A handful stay reliably open year-round, mainly around the fishing harbours, serving whatever came off the boats. The wine bars occasionally function on logic that’s hard to predict. Check specific places before travelling rather than assuming the main street has options every evening.
The archaeological museum in Vis Town is worth your time, genuinely good for understanding how significant this small island was in antiquity. Walking the old Austrian fortifications and the coastal paths costs nothing and the winter light is atmospheric.
Is it worth visiting? For the right person, absolutely yes. If you want empty Roman ruins, excellent local wine with no tourist markup, and long walks without another soul on the path, March delivers completely. If you need reliable restaurant hours, beach swimming, and things happening at night, come back in June.
**Practical tip:** bring more cash than you think you need. Card machines exist but reliability drops sharply in shoulder season, and the one ATM on the island occasionally has other ideas.
