The weather is genuinely unpredictable. The Albanian Riviera in December can surprise you with mild, almost pleasant days where you’re sitting outside a cafe in a light jacket feeling quietly smug. It can also deliver grey, drizzly weeks where the mountains disappear behind cloud and the sea looks like hammered pewter. Often it does both within the same trip. Rainfall is a real possibility rather than a rare annoyance, so pack accordingly and don’t plan your entire visit around beach walks.

What you will get, unambiguously, is the place almost entirely to yourself. Vlore in summer is chaotic, crowded, and frankly exhausting if you’re not into that energy. In December the waterfront promenade belongs to locals doing their evening stroll, old men playing dominoes, and maybe a handful of other curious travellers who found their way here off-season. There’s something genuinely lovely about that.

Most of the beach-facing restaurants and bars close completely or keep erratic hours. Day trips to Kanina Castle make complete sense in cooler weather when hiking isn’t punishing.

Is it worth visiting? For culture-curious, slow-travel types who don’t need a beach holiday to feel satisfied – yes, genuinely. For anyone expecting the Riviera experience with cocktails on a sunlounger – hard no, wrong season entirely.

The city has a slightly melancholy off-season atmosphere that some people find atmospheric and others find depressing. Know which type you are before you book.

**Practical tip:** Bring cash. Some smaller businesses reduce card payment options in winter when tourist flow drops, and ATMs in the centre aren’t always reliable. Stock up before you wander.
