Where to Stay in Berat
Where to Stay in Berat
Berat is one of Albania’s most rewarding destinations precisely because it hasn’t been overrun yet, and accommodation here remains genuinely affordable without much compromise on quality or character.
The best place to stay is the Mangalem quarter, the old Ottoman town that climbs the hillside on the western bank of the Osum River. Guesthouses here are typically family-run, tucked into restored stone houses with wooden balconies and views across the white tower-house facades that earned Berat its nickname as the City of a Thousand Windows. Staying here puts you within walking distance of the main sights, and the narrow lanes are atmospheric without being tourist-trap territory. Expect to pay roughly eight to fifteen euros per night for a basic private room, sometimes including a simple breakfast of bread, cheese, olives and fresh fruit that the host family throws in because that’s simply how things work here.
The Gorica neighbourhood across the river is another solid option, slightly quieter and less visited, with a handful of small guesthouses that charge similar rates. It feels more like living in a genuine residential neighbourhood, which suits slower travellers well.
Avoid booking anything that describes itself as being near the bus station unless you specifically need that convenience. That part of the modern town has no character and puts you a long walk from everything worth seeing.
For budget travellers, the sweet spot is a family guesthouse in Mangalem booked directly rather than through a major platform. Owners often offer better rates via email or WhatsApp, and you get a more human experience. Hostels exist but are limited, so don’t expect a party scene.
The booking mistake that catches people out is assuming Berat has the same accommodation density as Tirana or Saranda. It doesn’t. The town has relatively few beds overall, and during July and August even low-crowd standards shift. The guesthouses that remain affordable and well-reviewed fill up faster than the town’s size suggests they would. Book at least two weeks ahead in summer, and you’ll have no problems at all.
