Where to Stay in Cappadocia
Where to Stay in Cappadocia
Cappadocia is one of Turkey’s most visited regions, and accommodation here fills up fast, especially from April through October and during the hot air balloon festival periods. For mid-range travelers, the sweet spot is the town of Göreme, which sits right in the heart of the valley and gives you walkable access to open-air museums, hiking trails, and the best restaurant options. A decent cave hotel in Göreme with a rooftop terrace will run you roughly 80 to 150 USD per night, and that price point gets you a genuinely atmospheric room carved into volcanic rock rather than just a standard box with a stone facade glued on.
Ürgüp is worth considering if you want something slightly quieter and more polished. It attracts an older crowd and has better wine bars, since it sits close to the local vineyards. Rooms here at the same price tier tend to be a little larger and better maintained, though you will need a taxi or rental car to reach most viewpoints and trailheads. Uçhisar is another solid option, positioned around the castle rock with genuinely dramatic views, but the town itself is small and options thin out quickly when demand is high.
Avoid booking in Avanos unless you specifically want a pottery-focused day trip town. It lacks the atmosphere and requires constant transport to reach anything worth seeing. Also skip the generic hotels on the outskirts of Nevşehir, which serves as the region’s transport hub but has almost none of the magic people come here for.
The one booking mistake people make constantly is waiting too long and then accepting whatever is available. In high season, even mediocre cave rooms with poor reviews sell out, and you end up paying mid-range prices for budget-quality accommodation. Book at least six to eight weeks ahead if you want a rooftop terrace, a proper cave room, and any chance of securing a hot air balloon package through your hotel at a reasonable rate.
Budget travelers should look at Göreme guesthouses and hostels on the eastern side of town. Luxury seekers should head to Uçhisar, where boutique properties deliver views that genuinely justify the splurge.
