Where to Stay in Faro
Where to Stay in Faro
Faro doesn’t get the same attention as the Algarve’s beach resorts, which actually works in your favor when it comes to accommodation. The city is genuinely livable and interesting, and mid-range travelers have solid options without paying inflated coastal resort prices.
The best area to base yourself is the historic center, known as Cidade Velha, or the streets immediately surrounding it. Staying here puts you within walking distance of the old town walls, the marina, decent restaurants, and the ferry connections to the barrier island beaches. Boutique guesthouses and small three-star hotels dominate this zone, and you’ll typically pay between 70 and 120 euros per night for something clean and characterful. The neighborhood has atmosphere without being overrun, and you can actually feel like you’re in a real Portuguese city rather than a tourist bubble.
The area around the train station and Largo de São Francisco is another practical choice. It’s slightly less charming but more convenient if you’re arriving by rail or bus and don’t want to drag luggage far. Prices are marginally lower here, and you lose very little in terms of access to the things worth seeing.
Avoid properties on the outskirts near the airport or along the main commercial strips unless you have a car. These areas save you almost nothing and leave you dependent on taxis or buses for everything. The savings rarely justify the inconvenience.
For mid-range specifically, look at family-run guesthouses over chain hotels. The chains that exist in Faro tend to be overpriced for what they deliver. A local guesthouse at the same price point almost always wins on character, breakfast quality, and helpful local knowledge.
The most common booking mistake people make is choosing Faro as a one-night transit stop and underbooking accordingly. They grab whatever’s cheap near the airport, see nothing meaningful, and leave thinking the city is dull. Faro rewards at least two nights. Book somewhere in the center with that time in mind and the city will surprise you.
