Where to Stay in Fez

Fez is one of those cities where your accommodation choice genuinely makes or breaks the trip. The medina is where you want to be, specifically the Fes el-Bali area, which is the ancient walled city and the beating heart of everything worth seeing. Staying here puts you within walking distance of the tanneries, the souks, and the great mosques. For budget travelers, this is also where you’ll find the best value, with small riads and basic guesthouses offering clean rooms and sometimes even rooftop access for remarkably low prices.

Within Fes el-Bali, aim for the area around Bou Inania Madrasa or the Rcif neighborhood. These spots keep you close to the main attractions without dumping you directly onto the loudest tourist corridors. Budget guesthouses here regularly come in between 15 and 35 dollars per night, and many include a simple breakfast. The trade-off is navigating genuinely confusing alleyways, which sounds romantic until you’re lost with heavy luggage at midnight.

Avoid the Ville Nouvelle, the modern French-built quarter, unless you specifically want bland convenience. It’s quieter and easier to navigate but completely strips the reason most people come to Fez in the first place. The atmosphere is flat, and you’ll spend money on taxis to reach anything interesting.

For the lower end of budget travel, dormitory beds exist in a handful of hostels near Bab Boujloud, the famous blue gate. These run around 10 to 15 dollars and attract a good mix of solo travelers. The social scene is decent, and staff are usually helpful with directions.

The single booking mistake people consistently make is reserving accommodation without confirming exact meeting instructions. Most riads and guesthouses sit inside the medina where cars cannot enter, meaning you’ll need someone to physically meet you at a gate. Properties almost always offer this service, but you need to arrange it in advance. Showing up at the wrong entrance after a long journey with no phone signal is an incredibly common and entirely avoidable disaster. Confirm the pickup point before you travel, not after you land.
