Where to Stay in Roses

Where to Stay in Roses

Roses sits on the northern end of the Costa Brava in Catalonia, and finding the right place to stay makes a genuine difference to how much you enjoy it. The town has distinct zones, and they feel quite different from each other depending on what you want from a holiday.

The central area around the old town and marina is the sweet spot for mid-range travellers. You get walkable access to restaurants, the beach promenade, and the weekly market without paying the premium of the most exposed seafront positions. Boutique hotels and well-run apartment rentals in this zone typically run between 90 and 160 euros per night in high season, which is reasonable for the Costa Brava. The streets here have genuine local character rather than pure tourist infrastructure.

Almadrava and Santa Margarida are quieter residential areas a short drive or taxi ride from the centre. Santa Margarida in particular suits families who want calmer beaches and self-catering apartments with pools. Prices drop noticeably here, sometimes by 20 to 30 percent compared to central Roses, and the beaches are less crowded. The trade-off is that you need a car or you will spend money on taxis every evening.

The strip closest to the main Roses beach near the port gets noisy in July and August. It attracts a younger crowd and bars stay loud past midnight. Budget travellers might tolerate this fine, but mid-range visitors looking for a decent night’s sleep should move a few streets back or choose the quieter bays mentioned above.

Budget travellers do well with apartments booked directly through local agencies rather than major platforms, where fees can inflate the price significantly. Splurging visitors should look toward small design hotels in the old town or consider staying in nearby CadaquƩs and driving to Roses for day trips.

The single most common booking mistake is securing a sea view room at a front-facing hotel without checking whether the promenade below operates a summer bar. Several do, and the reviews mentioning this appear consistently. Read the recent negative reviews specifically before confirming, not just the headline score.
