Where to Stay in Himarë

Where to Stay in Himarë

Himarë sits along one of Albania’s most beautiful stretches of coastline, and the good news for budget travelers is that staying here doesn’t require much financial pain, especially if you time your visit right or know which part of town to base yourself in.

The old village up on the hill is genuinely the best area to stay for budget travelers who want character without noise. Small guesthouses and family-run rooms cluster around the castle area, and hosts here tend to offer better value than the beachfront because they’re competing less aggressively for the summer crowd. You get cooler temperatures, quieter nights, and views that honestly make the slight inconvenience of walking down to the beach completely worth it. Palasa, a small village just north of Himarë proper, is another underrated option with very few tourists and even lower prices, though you’ll need your own transport.

The beachfront strip along Spile Beach and the main road running parallel to the water is where prices jump and noise increases. It’s not that you should entirely avoid it, but rooms directly on that strip often charge a premium for location while delivering thin walls, generator noise from nearby bars, and a general feeling that you’re one of many transactions being processed quickly. If you do want to be close to the water, look one or two streets back rather than directly on the promenade.

For genuine budget stays, private rooms in family homes are your best tool. Many aren’t listed on major booking platforms at all. Walking around the old village and asking directly, or checking Albanian Facebook travel groups, regularly turns up rooms for ten to twenty euros per night including breakfast. Hostel infrastructure is minimal here compared to Sarandë, so don’t expect a traditional dorm scene.

The booking mistake people consistently make is reserving too far in advance through large platforms in July and August, locking themselves into refund-unfriendly rates, when showing up a day or two before in late June or September gives you negotiating power and genuinely better prices from hosts who prefer direct cash arrangements.
