Where to Stay in Lecce

Lecce rewards visitors who choose their accommodation carefully, and the good news is that the historic center does almost all the heavy lifting. Staying within the old city walls puts you within walking distance of essentially everything worth seeing, and for mid-range travelers this is absolutely the right call. The area around Piazza Sant’Oronzo and the surrounding baroque streets offers the best balance of atmosphere, convenience, and reasonable pricing. You’ll find well-restored palazzo-style B&Bs and small boutique hotels tucked into buildings that are genuinely centuries old, often with exposed stone walls and courtyard breakfasts that feel completely disproportionate to what you’re paying compared to Rome or Florence prices.

For mid-range budgets, expect to spend somewhere between 80 and 150 euros per night for a solid double room with character. This tier gets you quality in Lecce without compromise. Look for accommodation along or just off Via Libertini, Via Umberto I, and the quieter lanes near the Duomo. These streets are central without sitting directly on the tourist drag, so you get atmosphere without noise bleeding in until midnight.

What to avoid is the area immediately around the train station. It’s functional and cheaper, but Lecce’s station neighborhood has little charm, and the fifteen-minute walk back at night after dinner feels longer than it sounds. Budget travelers who truly need to cut costs should look there or consider agriturismos a short drive outside the city, though you’ll need a car or taxi for everything. For splurge travelers, the options inside the historic center become genuinely spectacular, with some converted noble residences offering suites that are among the most atmospheric in southern Italy.

The booking mistake people consistently make is arriving in late July or August without reservations. Lecce draws serious summer crowds from Italian families and European tourists alike, and the best mid-range properties inside the walls book out weeks ahead. The shoulder months of May, June, and September are honestly preferable anyway, with better weather, manageable crowds, and occasionally better rates even at the same quality properties.
