Where to Stay in Mostar
Where to Stay in Mostar
Mostar is one of the most visited spots in the Balkans, and accommodation fills up fast, especially in summer when the crowds around Stari Most can feel genuinely overwhelming. For budget travelers, the good news is that this is still a relatively affordable city, but you need to book early and book smart.
The best area to stay is the Old Town itself, specifically the streets radiating out from the Old Bridge on the Bosniak west bank. Yes, it gets noisy and touristy during the day, but being within walking distance of everything without needing transport makes it worthwhile. Hostels here run between 12 and 20 euros a night for a dorm bed, and the social atmosphere is excellent for solo travelers. The Lučki Most area, slightly further from the main drag, offers guesthouses and small family-run pensions that are noticeably cheaper and quieter once the day tourists leave.
The east bank near Kujundžiluk, while atmospheric, tends to price itself higher because of pure footfall demand. You are paying for the view and proximity to photo opportunities more than comfort. It is not a scam, but the value is lower unless you genuinely want that specific experience.
What to avoid is staying too far from the center. Some budget listings appear on booking platforms in neighborhoods that require a 25-minute walk or a taxi every time you want to see anything. The price looks great until you factor in the heat in July and the general inconvenience.
For budget travelers, prioritize hostels with air conditioning listed explicitly in the amenities. Mostar summers are brutally hot, and some older guesthouses do not have it despite claiming otherwise in vague descriptions. Ask before you book.
The single most common booking mistake people make in Mostar is booking non-refundable rates in early spring, assuming summer crowds are manageable. They are not. The city gets packed from June through September, and if your travel dates shift even slightly, you lose your money and face a fully booked landscape. Always go flexible rate until two weeks out.
