Where to Stay in Taormina
Where to Stay in Taormina
Taormina is a small hilltop town, which means accommodation options are concentrated in a fairly compact area, and location matters more here than almost anywhere else in Sicily. The sweet spot for mid-range travelers is the historic center itself, particularly along or just off Corso Umberto, the main pedestrian street. Staying here puts you within walking distance of the Greek Theatre, the public gardens, and the best restaurants without needing to constantly navigate the town’s steep, narrow lanes carrying shopping bags or tired legs. Hotels in this zone in the mid-range bracket, roughly 120 to 220 euros per night, are plentiful and generally solid, often housed in older buildings with terraces and sea views that genuinely justify the price.
The Mazzarò area down at sea level, connected to the hilltop by cable car, attracts visitors who want beach access, and some mid-range properties exist there too. It works well if swimming is your priority, but you’ll quickly tire of the cable car commute for every meal and evening stroll, especially during summer when queues build up. Avoid booking anything described as being in Letojanni or Giardini Naxos and marketed as Taormina-adjacent. They’re nearby towns, not Taormina, and that 20-minute drive feels much longer after dinner.
Taormina draws enormous crowds from June through September. If your dates fall in peak season, book at least three to four months ahead. Mid-range properties fill fast, and late bookers end up in worse rooms at higher prices or pushed entirely out of the historic center. For budget travelers, small guesthouses and B&Bs tucked into the residential streets just below the main corso offer basic but clean rooms from around 80 euros. Splurging to 250 euros and above unlocks properties with private terraces and genuinely spectacular views of the bay and Mount Etna.
The single most common booking mistake people make in Taormina is not checking whether the property has elevator access or how many steps are involved in reaching the room. The town is built on a cliff. Many charming hotels involve significant stair climbs, which becomes a real problem with heavy luggage or mobility considerations.
