Where to Stay in Tetouan
Where to Stay in Tetouan
Tetouan doesn’t get nearly the tourist traffic of Fes or Marrakech, which is genuinely good news for budget travelers. Prices stay honest, guesthouse owners aren’t burned out on visitors, and you can actually negotiate without feeling like you’re fighting through a script.
The medina is where you want to be, full stop. It’s a UNESCO-listed old city that most tourists skip entirely on their way between Tangier and Chefchaouen, so accommodation here costs a fraction of comparable riads elsewhere. Look around the area near Place Hassan II and the central souks. Small family-run guesthouses tucked into the medina lanes charge somewhere between 100 and 200 dirhams per night for a basic private room with a shared bathroom. Breakfast is often included or available for a few extra dirhams, and it’s real breakfast, not a token gesture.
The Ensanche district, Tetouan’s Spanish colonial neighborhood just outside the medina walls, offers a slightly different experience. It’s quieter, the streets are wider, and a handful of modest hotels here cater to Moroccan business travelers rather than tourists, which keeps prices grounded. Expect clean, no-frills rooms with private bathrooms for around 150 to 250 dirhams.
Avoid staying near the bus stations on the outskirts unless you’re arriving very late and just need to sleep before moving on. The area offers nothing of interest and adds unnecessary commuting time to your days.
For genuine budget travelers, the trick is walking into guesthouses directly rather than booking through platforms. Tetouan hasn’t been fully absorbed into the online booking ecosystem, and owners often give better rates in person, especially for stays of two nights or more. Even simple negotiation, done politely, usually shaves 20 to 30 dirhams off the asking price.
The single booking mistake people make is reserving accommodation in nearby Martil or Mdiq on the coast, thinking they’ll day-trip into Tetouan. It sounds logical on a map but adds taxi costs and time that quickly erase any perceived savings. Stay in the medina itself and keep your money for food and wandering.
