Nafplio is compact enough that location matters less than in bigger cities, but you’ll still want to pay attention to where you book. The Old Town is the obvious choice for mid-range travelers, and for good reason. Staying within those narrow Venetian streets puts you within walking distance of Syntagma Square, the waterfront promenade, and the steps up to Palamidi Fortress. Hotels here tend to be converted neoclassical mansions with stone walls and wooden ceilings, which adds genuine character without the premium price of the truly boutique options. Expect to pay somewhere between 80 and 150 euros per night for a decent double room with breakfast, depending on the season.

The area around Acronafplia, the lower castle hill, is worth considering if you want slightly quieter nights while still being a short walk from everything. Some small family-run guesthouses sit along the edges here, often with better views than the properties right on the busy central streets. These owners tend to be more communicative and flexible about things like late check-in, which matters when Greek ferries and buses run on their own schedule.

What to genuinely avoid is booking anything along the main road entering town, near the bus station. It saves a few euros but puts you in a soulless strip of convenience stores and traffic noise, completely disconnecting you from what makes Nafplio worth visiting in the first place.

Budget travelers can find reasonable rooms on the edges of the Old Town rather than dead center, often just two or three streets back from the waterfront. You sacrifice nothing except maybe five minutes of walking. For those spending a bit more, look for places that include breakfast because the included meals at better guesthouses are genuinely good and save you the hassle of figuring out mornings.

The booking mistake people consistently make is reserving too far in advance without checking cancellation policies. Nafplio is popular for weekend getaways from Athens, so rooms fill up Thursday through Sunday, but shoulder season Monday arrivals often sit half-empty. Book with free cancellation, then rebook closer to your dates if better options appear.
