# Vis in November: Beautiful, Quiet, and a Little Bleak
Let me be straight with you: Vis in November is not the Vis of Instagram. The crystalline water and packed harbour restaurants exist here, but they’re hibernating, and the island has put on a completely different personality for the off-season.
**What it’s actually like**
Sixteen degrees sounds reasonable until you factor in the wind. The bura can rip across the island making that temperature feel considerably less civilised, and the 150mm of rain across the month means you will get rained on, probably several times. But between the squalls, November delivers something genuinely lovely – dramatic skies over the Adriatic, the hills above Komiža looking properly wild and green, and a stillness that makes you realise how fundamentally different this place is when it belongs to locals again.
The light is soft and low. Walks along the coastal paths feel almost meditative. The sea is still swimmable if you’re determined or slightly unhinged.
**Crowds and what’s open**
Virtually no tourists. This is not an exaggeration. You may be the only foreigner some days. Most restaurants, bars and accommodation have closed entirely until April – this is a serious consideration, not a minor inconvenience. In Vis town and Komiža, you’ll find perhaps one or two restaurants operating, a bakery, the basics. Don’t arrive expecting options.
**Is it worth it, and for whom?**
If you want tranquillity, hiking, photography, or a genuine sense of what an Adriatic island actually is outside the performance of summer tourism, then absolutely yes. It’s unexpectedly moving. If you want beach clubs, fresh seafood menus and a social scene, go somewhere else or come back in June.
**One practical tip**
Ring your accommodation before booking and directly ask which restaurants will definitely be open during your specific dates. Don’t assume anything listed online is trading – several places update their websites approximately never. Arriving on a rainy Sunday evening to discover your dinner options have already closed for winter is a particular kind of dispiriting experience.
