# Formentera in October: The Honest Version

Here’s the thing about Formentera in October – it’s genuinely lovely, but for completely different reasons than the glossy Instagram version you’ve seen.

The crowds have largely gone home. That soul-crushing July situation where you’re basically lying on top of strangers at Ses Illetes beach? Completely gone. You can actually walk along the shoreline, find a spot without military precision planning, and hear something other than thumping speakers from nearby yachts. The island feels like it’s exhaling after a long, exhausting summer.

At 22.8°C, the weather sits in that sweet spot – warm enough to swim comfortably in the first couple of weeks, genuinely pleasant for cycling the flat interior roads without sweating through everything you own. That said, 52.5mm of rain across the month is real. You’ll likely encounter at least a few overcast days or proper afternoon showers, so pack a light waterproof and don’t base your entire trip around guaranteed wall-to-wall sunshine. You’re not getting August.

What’s open is the honest part that requires managing expectations. A significant chunk of restaurants and beach bars close from mid-October onward. Some of the best ones, actually. You’ll find the island functioning rather than thriving, with locals visibly reclaiming their home. The ferry from Ibiza still runs regularly, but accommodation options narrow considerably.

**Is it worth it?** Absolutely, but not for everyone. If your ideal holiday involves a packed social scene, every restaurant firing on all cylinders, and guaranteed sun every day, push it back to May or early June. But if you want quiet beaches, genuinely warm temperatures, good cycling, a feeling of discovering somewhere rather than queuing for it, and significantly cheaper prices – October Formentera is quietly brilliant. Couples, solo travelers, cyclists, and anyone with a beach fatigue problem from busier destinations will love it.

**Practical tip:** Rent a bike on day one and book your preferred restaurants in advance. The ones still operating fill up faster than you’d expect precisely because so many have already closed for winter.
