# Mljet in July: Beautiful, But You’re Not the Only One Who Figured That Out
Look, Mljet is genuinely one of the most beautiful places in the Adriatic. The national park, those impossibly green saltwater lakes, the monastery sitting on its little island – it earns its reputation. But visiting in July means accepting that roughly ten thousand other people have read the same articles you have.
The weather is reliably glorious. High twenties, strong sunshine, water warm enough to actually enjoy rather than just bravely endure. That 31mm of rain is spread across maybe three or four brief thunderstorms that roll through dramatically and clear within hours. You will almost certainly have sun. The heat is real but the island’s forest cover helps – it’s not as punishing as Split or Dubrovnik can feel.
What July actually looks like on the ground: the national park entrance at Pristanište gets busy by mid-morning, with boats from Dubrovnik and Korčula depositing day-trippers who crowd the lake circuit trail and pile onto the little ferry to St. Mary’s island. Polače and Pomena, the main villages, feel more lively than they probably should for settlements this size. Every restaurant is open, every kayak rental is running, accommodation is fully operational and fully booked if you haven’t planned ahead. The island functions well in July – it’s just functioning for a lot of people simultaneously.
It’s absolutely worth it for people who want a proper base and plan to explore early. Get to the lakes before 9am and you’ll have stretches of path almost to yourself with extraordinary light on the water. It suits couples, slow travellers, anyone renting a bike or kayak and willing to find the quieter southern coves away from the park’s main circuit.
If you hate crowds philosophically and can’t adapt your timing, consider May or September instead. You’d get a similar island with notably less company.
**Practical tip:** Book your national park boat tickets online before you arrive. The queue for the St. Mary’s island ferry in July is genuinely dispiriting if you’ve just hiked to it.
