# Nice in March: Honest Thoughts

March in Nice sits in that awkward middle ground where winter hasn’t quite let go but the city is starting to remember what it’s supposed to be. The temperature averages around 15°C, which sounds pleasant enough until you factor in the wind coming off the Mediterranean. It can feel genuinely cold in the shade, and with nearly 92mm of rain spread across the month, you should absolutely pack a proper jacket and accept that some days will just be grey and damp. That said, when the sun does appear between showers, sitting outside with a coffee near the Old Town feels genuinely magical in a way that peak summer, sweating next to strangers, simply doesn’t.

The crowds are refreshingly manageable. The Promenade des Anglais belongs to joggers and locals walking their dogs rather than sunburnt tourists in matching outfits. You can actually stand in front of Matisse’s paintings at the museum without someone’s phone hovering in your face. Restaurants have tables available, staff have patience, and prices reflect something closer to reality.

Almost everything is open. A few smaller beach restaurants might still be shuttered, and some day-trip boat services haven’t started running yet, but the major museums, markets, and restaurants are fully operational. The flower market on Cours Saleya remains one of the best things to do in Nice regardless of season.

**Is it worth going?** For beach holidays, genuinely no. The water is cold, the beaches are quiet for a reason, and you’ll feel slightly underdressed for swimming if that’s your plan. But if you want Nice as a city rather than a resort, March is actually excellent. It suits people who prefer museums over sunbathing, enjoy food markets, want to explore without heat exhaustion, or are using it as a base for day trips into the hills and villages.

**One practical tip:** bring layers you can actually add and remove throughout the day. You’ll start mornings in your coat, possibly shed it by noon, and want it back by four o’clock.
