# Ajaccio in March: Honest Thoughts
March in Ajaccio sits in that slightly awkward shoulder season where the island hasn’t fully woken up yet but winter has mostly loosened its grip. Nearly 15 degrees sounds reasonable on paper, and honestly it often feels pleasant enough when the sun comes out, which it does. But that 92mm of rainfall is real and you’ll feel it. Expect proper rainy days, not just light drizzle, mixed in with genuinely lovely bright afternoons where you’re sitting outside a café in a light jacket feeling pretty smug about beating the crowds. The weather is genuinely unpredictable in a way that requires flexibility rather than a rigid itinerary.
The crowds situation is straightforward: there basically aren’t any. The cruise ships haven’t arrived yet, the summer French families are nowhere to be seen, and you’ll have the old town, the Fesch museum and Napoleon’s birthplace almost entirely to yourself. This is either wonderful or slightly eerie depending on your personality. The citadel and old port feel authentically local rather than performatively picturesque.
The trade-off is that some things are closed or running reduced hours. Beach bars, many boat trips and quite a few restaurants in the tourist-facing areas won’t have bothered opening properly yet. The town itself is fully functional with decent local restaurants and markets operating normally, but if your vision of Corsica involves sundrenched terraces and azure water activities, March will disappoint you.
Who should actually go? Walkers, museum people, anyone wanting to genuinely explore a place without the noise around it, people doing the region on a tighter budget since accommodation drops considerably. It works particularly well if you have a car and plan to drive into the interior or along the coast rather than treating Ajaccio purely as a beach destination.
**One practical tip:** Pack for four seasons in a single bag. You will genuinely need a waterproof, sunscreen, layers and comfortable walking shoes that can handle wet cobblestones. Sandals in March here is a trap.
