# Selçuk in January: Honest Notes
Let’s be real about the weather first. Twelve degrees sounds almost reasonable until you factor in that it rains constantly. January dumps more water on this corner of Turkey than almost any other month, and 158mm is not a light drizzle situation. You will get wet. The hills around town turn genuinely green and lush, which is actually beautiful, but the ancient stones of Ephesus darken with moisture and the marble paths become genuinely treacherous underfoot. Wear shoes with actual grip.
Here’s the thing though: Ephesus in January is extraordinary precisely because almost nobody is there. In summer this site gets absolutely crushed with cruise ship passengers and tour buses, shoulder to shoulder along the Curetes Street, everyone’s selfie stick in everyone else’s face. In January you can stand in front of the Library of Celsus and have a genuine moment with it. That alone is worth something significant.
Most of the main attractions stay open, including Ephesus itself and the excellent Ephesus Museum in town. The House of the Virgin Mary is accessible. The Basilica of St. John sits quietly on its hill. Things close earlier than summer hours, so check before you go, but you won’t find yourself locked out of the highlights.
The town itself feels authentically itself in January rather than performing for tourists. Restaurants are open but quieter, prices drop noticeably, and guesthouse owners actually have time to talk to you. You’ll encounter more cats than tourists, which depending on your preferences is either a problem or a feature.
Is it worth it? For independent travelers who find crowds genuinely exhausting and don’t mind packing waterproofs, absolutely yes. For families with young children or anyone whose enjoyment depends on sunshine and warmth, probably wait for April or October. The shoulder seasons here are genuinely lovely and give you some crowd relief without the January sogginess.
**Practical tip:** Book accommodation with a good breakfast included. On a cold, wet morning, starting with something warm before heading to the ruins makes a real difference to how the whole day feels.
