# Syros in March: Honest Thoughts

March on Syros is genuinely lovely, but you need to go in with the right expectations rather than dreaming of sundrenched terraces and swimming.

The weather sits around 15 degrees, which sounds reasonable until the Aegean wind gets involved. That wind is real and persistent, and combined with overcast skies it can feel considerably colder than the thermometer suggests. Pack layers you actually mean it. You’ll get some beautiful clear days where the light on Ermoupoli’s neoclassical facades is absolutely stunning, but you’ll also get grey, blustery afternoons where you’re very glad the cafes exist. Rainfall is moderate rather than torrential, so it rarely ruins a full day, more that you get interrupted hours here and there.

Crowds are essentially non-existent. Syros is the administrative capital of the Cyclades, meaning it functions as a real working town year-round rather than shutting down like Mykonos does. The bakeries, tavernas, local shops and the market around the port are all open and serving actual residents rather than tourists. This is genuinely one of the nicest things about visiting then. You feel like you’re somewhere real.

That said, some of the more tourism-facing businesses keep reduced hours or sporadic schedules, so don’t assume every restaurant listed online is open. The Apollo Theatre, one of the most beautiful small opera houses in Europe, is worth checking schedules for specifically.

Is it worth visiting in March? For certain people, absolutely yes. If you want to walk the hilly streets of Ano Syros, explore the town without navigating crowds, eat well, and feel like you’ve genuinely discovered somewhere rather than processed through it, March works beautifully. If your heart is set on beach days and evening cocktails outdoors, wait until May.

The one practical tip: bring waterproof walking shoes rather than trainers. The marble-paved streets look gorgeous but become genuinely treacherous when wet, and you will encounter wet ones.

Syros in March rewards the curious and patient traveller more than almost anywhere else in the Cyclades.
